Dear TeamJXN Member:
Happy New Year! As TeamJXN gears up for another successful year we’d like to report to you on our events in 2018 and let you know some of our plans for the next 12 months.
In 2018 we had two major luncheons—in the spring we met at Up in Farms, the food hub spearheaded by Jeff Good and David Watkins, Jr. There we heard from David, along with Jordan Butler and D.J. Baker, on the opportunities that Jackson has to be a central player in a modern era of farming for the state of Mississippi.
This fall we met at Hal and Mal’s for a presentation by the Jackson Department of Planning and Development, headed by Dr. Mukesh Kumar. He and his team walked attendees through a number of different projects that the city has undertaken from a fantastic “parklet” experiment on Congress Street to modernization of their permitting systems. The City of Jackson recently received a $1 million placemaking grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, to be used toward an art project highlighting issues around food access and nutrition.
Along with the luncheons, we added to our holiday tradition of the State Street Open House. Last winter we celebrated the opening of the Mississippi Museum of History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum with a Coalesce open house; this year, we sponsored a Capitol Street open house with a variety of events taking place at the King Edward Hotel, the Capitol Street Art Lofts and a number of businesses and restaurants in those blocks.
Aside from events, our major initiative in 2018 was taking over the management of the Coalesce coworking and event space on State Street in downtown. We were thrilled to find the exquisitely named Lena Horne to manage the space, wrangle new members for it and get it into shape. Starting in 2019, Lena and Shameka Reed of our Coalesce committee will be organizing monthly professional development meetings for members of Coalesce and TeamJXN.
Coalesce hosted a number of events throughout the year that encourage economic development in Jackson, from 1 Million Cups to Startup Weekend Jackson and the Delta iFund opening weekend. Coalesce is also home to a number of local meetups on technology and innovation.
Remember that TeamJXN members get special pricing for Coalesce—for a very low monthly fee you can get a keyfob to the space, a locker, access to coffee, water, beer, wifi, a printer and a conference room you can reserve. Members can also use the space for evening and weekend functions. Give Lena a call at 601-526-3728 or write to email@example.com.
For 2019, we’re planning quarterly luncheons on the latest Jackson developments, checking in on some exciting projects such as the Lamar Life building, new retail and restaurant developments in the District and downtown, as well as initiatives such as the coding and virtual reality academies that are changing lives in Jackson while growing the economy.
As is true every year, we’ll need your help to make TeamJXN succeed in 2019!
Please consider renewing your membership at the current or a higher level this year. And, as a TeamJXN member, please also consider taking advantage of your discounted Coalesce membership, giving you access to the co-working space and all if its perks.
Thanks for all of your support and participation in past years. We look forward to a number of exciting events and new ideas and innovations in Jackson for 2019. Join us!
